Max and Leisel have many things in common, even though Max is older then her. They both lost one of their parents when they were young. Max was 4 when he lost him father and Leisel was 10 when she lost her mother. They both don't have any family left except the Huberman. Both Max and Leisel have lived very depressing life's but they have stayed strong enough to meet each other. Max's life has been way harder since hes a Jew. He spent most of his life in the ghettos. Max has spent the last two years hiding in a factory hopping he doesn't get killed. Max and Leisel become friends threw their love of word and books. Max moving in with them gave Leisel encouragement to bring news from the outside in to the inside to Max. Leisel delights herself by bringing Max news paper, unfinished crosswords, and things for him to get entertained with. Leisel's birthday was coming up and they didn't have nothing to give her. So Max gave her a book called The Stand Over Man."During that week max had cut a collection of pages from Mein Kamp and painted them over in white. He then Hung them up with pegs on some string from one end of the basement to the other" (Zusak, 223) The book describes Max's hardships and the relationship to the girl who turned his life around. "Now I think we are friends, this girl and me. on her birthday it was she who gave a gift to me. It makes me understand that the best stand over man I've known is not a man at all" (Zusak, 235)
